Financial Aid

Your rights and responsibilities

You have the right to know:

  • The deadlines for submitting applications for each available financial aid program.
  • How your financial need was determined.
  • How much of your financial need has been met.
  • The resources considered in the calculation of your need.
  • Available financial aid programs and their exact requirements.
  • How the various financial aid program eligibilities are determined, how decisions on eligibility are made, the basis for these decisions, and the procedures for appealing decisions if you believe you have been treated unfairly.
  • The cost of attending WCU and WCU's refund policy.
  • How the university determines whether you are making satisfactory academic progress and what happens if you are not.
  • What happens if you withdraw or drop out during the year.
  • What portion of your financial aid is a loan and what portion is a grant. If the aid is a loan, you have the right to know the total amount that must be repaid, the amount of each payment, the interest rate, the length of time you have to repay the loan, and when the payment is to begin.
  • The procedures necessary for reapplying for financial aid each year and any priority filing dates.
  • Who can give you further advice.

You have these responsibilities:

  • To carefully consider all information provided regarding WCU financial assistance programs, performance expectations, and student responsibilities.
  • To complete all required forms accurately and submit them to the correct locations by the published deadlines. Errors will cause delays in the receipt of your financial aid. Intentional misreporting of information on application forms for federal aid is a violation of the law and is considered a criminal offense subject to penalties under the United States Criminal Code.
  • To provide all documentation requested to complete the verification of family resources as indicated.
  • To respond in a timely fashion regarding offers of financial assistance by the financial aid notification letter and indicate your acceptance or rejection of offered aid.
  • To maintain good academic standing and make satisfactory progress.
  • To inform the Office for Student Financial Aid of any and all outside scholarships or resources available to meet your cost of attending WCU not previously indicated on your application.
  • To read and understand all forms that you are asked to sign.
  • To provide updated information when changes in your circumstances occur, such as withdrawal from school or a change in your name, marital status, housing situation, or expected graduation date.
  • To attend both an entrance and exit interview if you borrow financial aid through the loan programs.
