Using the information
above, a typical in-state, on-campus student could expect to have institutional
charges of approximately $10277.00 for two semesters of attendance.
For students that apply for federal financial aid, the Office of Financial
Aid can award funds to students (and parents) not only for these institutional
charges but also for amounts that a student might reasonably expect
to need to cover miscellaneous expenses.
This comprehensive budget for awarding financial aid is called the university
Cost of Attendance. The Cost of Attendance includes the amount needed
to cover institutional charges as well as an allowed amount for books
and supplies, travel expenses, miscellaneous expenses, and reasonable
expenses related to covering the cost of a computer. if the student
is required to have one as a condition of admission to the university.
An example of a cost of attendance budget is presented below:
| Tuition
and fees- in-state |
$4415 |
| Room
and board - average |
$5540 |
|
Books and supplies |
$605
|
| Travel
|
$920 |
| Miscellaneous |
$1230 |
| Computer
allowance * |
$1400 |
| |
|
| Total
Cost of Attendance |
$14110 |
*only for entering
students required to have a computer as a condition of admission
So, for a student applying for financial aid, the student (and parents)
could be awarded an amount equal to the entire cost of attendance ($14110)
even though the student in this example only needs $10277 to cover his/her
bill to the school. Any money that is awarded to the student that is
not needed to cover institutional charges is given to the student in
a refund check after the student has started attending for the semester
(usually about 2 weeks after classes start providing the student has
completed all requirements for aid disbursement.
