WCU
is sensitive to the cost that students incur when preparing to enter
college. The Financial Aid Office understands that purchasing a computer,
in order to meet the WCU computer requirement, is a major expense.
While the Financial Aid Office cannot provide money to help students
at the time of the computer purchase, the office can provide money
to help reimburse the student and family for the expense they have
incurred. The following Q&A should help answer some of your questions
about Financial Aid and the WCU computer requirement.
Q. Who will be considered for financial assistance in purchasing
a personal computer at WCU?
A. All
entering undergraduate students who are required to have a computer
as an admissions requirement and who apply for financial assistance
by completing the FAFSA form.
Q. What
other requirements must be met besides applying for
financial aid?
A. Entering
students must be degree seeking students to be eligible for assistance.
Q. How
will entering students receive additional financial
assistance?
A. Entering
students meeting the above criteria will have their cost of education
(budget) increased by the cost of the minimum configured computer. An
increase in the budget allows for awarding greater financial assistance.
Q. What
type of financial aid will be available to help meet
the cost of the computer?
A. In
most cases, financial assistance will be provided as low interest federal
loans made available to both parents and students as part of the financial
aid award package.
Q. When
does the loan have to be repaid?
A.
Repayment of student federal loans begins 6 months
after the student graduates or fails to enroll as at
least a half-time student. Repayment of parent loans
begins 60 days after the second disbursement.
Q.
When will financial aid be available to reimburse the
cost of the computer?
A. Refund
checks, for all aid except Stafford loans, are available the third week
of class. Students needing the proceeds from the Stafford loans for
reimbursement must wait an additional three weeks.
